1. Keyword research: This is step one of Website copywriting. 2. Headline: The headline is number two on my list, but it’s number one for SEO Website copywriting. You absolutely must include your keyword in the headline. If you don’t, it’s like putting up a “For Sale” sign without stating what’s for sale. For instance, if you had a 2008 Black Honda Accord for sale but your sign said “Car for Sale,” how much are you not communicating?
3. Keyword placement: In addition to the headline, your primary keyword should appear in the first one or two sentences, be sprinkled throughout the copy as much as possible without distracting from your message, and be included towards the end of the page.
4. Homepage copy: This is where we see some of the most problems with Website copywriting. I recently attended a Webinar presented by Dana Willhoit, CEO of The Press Release Site (www.thepressreleasesite.com) and expert on press releases. The topic was “How to Use Your News to Grow Your Business.”

She brought up some great points and shared tips and tricks (many of which I use when writing press releases and other marketing materials for my own clients) on fool-proof ways to increase your exposure online. Dana echoed what I’ve mentioned to my clients and in a previous blog post on getting more publicity: You can create your own news!

How Do I Create My Own News?
You don’t have to release a new product or service, acquire a large new customer, or appoint a new executive to have a reason to publish press releases about your company online. Whether you’re a business of 1, 10, 100, or more, even small businesses can regularly produce relevant press releases to build their brand. You simply need a news angle.

News Angles
So, where do you find news angles? They’re everywhere. Check Google News, Yahoo! News, daily newspapers (the ones that leave black newsprint on your hands—yes, they’re still around), cable news, magazines, trade journals, etc. Keep an eye out for anything to which you can tie your news. These can vary from entertainment industry gossip to serious international news stories. Find a news story from which you can draw a parallel to some aspect of your business, and you have some timely news!

For instance, if you sell metal sheds and are wondering how you can get more publicity for your business, take a look at a benefit of your product and tie it to something in the news. The new Terminator movie is coming out soon. If you sell metal sheds, your news angle could be that your sheds are as indestructible as the Terminator. If you used the keywords right, your press releases could pop-up online in places you never would have imagined!

Writing Your Press Releases
There are several important facets to writing effective press releases, but I’ll stick to a few main ideas as they relate to search engines and search engine optimization (SEO). A few tips on keywords in your press releases:
• Use your keyword in the headline and towards the end of the first sentence. If it doesn’t “fit” in the first sentence, make sure it at least appears in the first paragraph.
• Spread your keyword throughout the body of your press releases, using it three to six times (depending on the length of the press release). You want your press releases to be keyword-rich so the search engines can find you, but you also need to make sure you don’t jam your keywords into your press releases so much that they become distracting to your human readers.
• Make your keywords bold. The search engines like this and it draws your readers’ eyes to the primary topic of your press release.

The moral of the story: You can create awareness for your products/services, increase your brand’s exposure, drive more potential customers to your Web site, and sell more products/services when you make your own news!

Get Multiple Exposure Online

Multiple exposure marketing, or what I’ve also referred to as a form of momentum marketing, works by reaching your target audience wherever they may be by using various forms of marketing communications.

The Internet and the use of search engine optimization (SEO) make reaching your potential customers easier than ever before. You can get multiple exposure online through your Web site, press releases, articles, blogs, email marketing, and many other ways. Your customers exist “offline” as well, of course, so a sound marketing campaign may also include printed marketing materials such as direct mail, brochures, flyers, etc.

To simplify things, let’s just focus on some of the ways multiple exposure marketing can really get your business noticed online. The good news is that very small campaigns can reap big rewards.

Case in Point:
A client of mine had a Web site and a blog. Unfortunately, since the Web site was not optimized, very few people found her online. She needed to reach out to her soon-to-be customers online. Each targeted a specific area of her expertise.

What Is Momentum Marketing Anyway?

In a previous blog post I mentioned that I’d be writing about momentum marketing—what it is, how to implement a strategy for your business, etc. I’m going to break up the topic into several bite-size blog posts, so check back often for updates.

To generate the maximum amount of awareness for your business and products/services, you need to capitalize on the marketing power of multiple exposure. Multiple exposure means creating multiple marketing pieces and then disseminating them to multiple mediums.

It’s not enough to JUST have a Web site or JUST a brochure or JUST a press release. You WILL sell more products and services if you cross-pollinate your marketing message across many complementary sources (both online and offline). To put it plainly, you need to be “all things to all people.” That is to say that your customers will find you in many different ways IF you give them the opportunity.

So, how does this all add up? Momentum marketing is the act of utilizing multiple methods of communicating your marketing message (be it through your Web site, direct mail campaign, brochure, press release, email marketing, etc.) to reach your customers wherever they may be.

You can make your business and products/services ubiquitous both online and offline.

Publicity: Can Your Business Get It?

I sat in on an interesting Webinar today presented by Kay Paumier of Communications Plus. The title of her Webinar was “How to Get Publicity When You Have No News.”

This struck me as a particularly great topic given the economic climate. (Don’t you love that term? Do economies really have climates? If so, ours is in a mini-Ice Age.) Aside from some of the larger financial institutions, which have nothing but bad news to report these days, small businesses have news to report too—and it’s not bad news, either!

In fact, every small business could, potentially, be releasing “news” every single week. “News” can be defined as a new client acquisition, a new product or service, a success story of how your company helped a client out of a jam, and much more. And, if applied correctly, this news can drive more traffic to your Web site and get you more customers.

Kay focused on traditional media sources (newspapers, magazines, trade journals, TV, radio, etc.) in her presentation. That was fine, but I’m more interested in online media sources (there’s obviously an overlap, though). Kay rightly pointed out that (good) publicity provides your business with credibility, it generates leads, and it makes you stand out from the crowd.

She discussed tips and techniques for interacting with traditional media (namely, reporters) as well. But the meat of her presentation was her “Eight Ways to Get Publicity.” They are:

1. HARO (www.helpareporterout.com) – A site that lets you sign-up to receive up to three emails per days with queries from reporters

2. Editorial calendars – Many publications post the topics for their upcoming issues on their online calendars

3. Letters to the editor – We all know the traditional way this works, and the online way is easily translated into responses to articles, blog posts, etc.

4. Calendar announcements – Media advisories of upcoming events

5. Seasonal publicity – Topics that tie into the holidays, tax time, summer, etc.

6. News opportunities – Offering a local angle to a national story, giving a story human interest, etc.

7. Product reviews – Reviews by editors of publications in your industry that increase your credibility and publicize favorable results

8. Visuals and video – These simply visualize a story, draw attention to your company and product/service, and increase the likelihood of coverage across all media

Kay delved into the nuances of each of these. I won’t rehash it here beyond my simple descriptions (feel free to contact her directly at kay@communicationsplus.net for more information), but suffice to say all eight are effective ways to get publicity.

So, why spend all this time providing you with an overview of Kay’s presentation? Well, for one thing, it was an informative presentation that I wanted to share and, secondly, it got me thinking: You’re busy focusing on your core business. You’re meeting with prospects and trying to sell more products and services. You’re busy.

The power of search engine optimization (SEO) article writing to improve a business' ranking on Internet keyword searches became very evident for one company today.
